Orthodontist Dr Sridevi Padmanabhan of Giri Road, Chennai, has made the neighbourhood proud, by being elected as the honorary secretary of Indian Orthodontic Society, for 2018-2021.

It may be noted that she is the first woman medical practitioner to hold the said post in the forum which was founded in 1965. Here are excerpts from her interview with News Today.

Few words about Orthodontics.

This is a specialty which deals with corrections of irregularities of the teeth and jaws, that affect the aesthetics of the face, smile and normal functioning.

Treatment for this, is a time-bound programme through which the irregular teeth will be corrected, giving the face a normal posture.

Is the treatment available for all ages and what is the time period for this?

Earlier, only children were treated. But now people of all ages are coming forward for this. Children by the age of seven should consult an Orthodontist for early treatment. Parents need not wait for all the milk teeth to fall. There is no age bar for getting braces. These can be put as long as the gums and teeth are healthy.

What is the Indian Orthodontic Society?

This is the first specialty society of Dentistry of India with close to 10,000 life and student members. The society was formed in 1965 and I am the first woman to be elected as honorary secretary for the forum.

We aim to promote the study and advance of the science of Orthodontics and to popularise, promote and educate the public about the importance of this treatment.

What are your services in T Nagar?

My husband Dr TV Padmanabhan, prosthodontist and implantologist, and me, have been treating residents at Giri Road, for several decades.

Do you conduct awareness camps?

During May, during World Orthodontics Day celebrations, we organise special camps to help out not only residents here, but also those from across the city, to know more about this and the importance of getting treated on time.

Dr Sridevi, is serving as professor and head of department of Orthodontics at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, situated in the city.

She can be reached at 96000 77428.
