Chennai: The Egmore police are conducting an inquiry into a complaint that a gang of men posing as fake CBI and Customs officers stole Rs 27 lakh from a private Forex company at Pantheon Road, Egmore.
The complaint was filed by Amith Meeran (55), a resident of Thiruvengadam Street, Pudupet. He ran the money exchange firm at Prince Plaza, Egmore with his sons Kaja Moideen and Nasser. He also had two helpers Mohammed and Basheer.
On Tuesday morning, five persons in a SUV came to the shop introducing themselves as officials of CBI and Customs. They carried out a raid at the company and asked the men to come to their office and in their vehicle and sign few documents.
Then the ‘officials’ said that if the firm gave them Rs 27 lakh, they would close the case. Amith agreed and sent Mohammed to collect the cash from their office. After receiving the cash Amith and the rest were dropped at Island Grounds and the gang sped away.
At 11 pm, Amith had realised he had been cheated and lodged a complaint with the Egmore police. A special team headed by an Assistant Commissioner is inquiring the case. They found the CCTV footage of the incident as well.
