Chennai: The Election Commission has not decided on countermanding the election in Vellore constituency.
Reports quoting EC spokesperson Shefali Charan said the poll body today denied reports in a section of the media that the election to Vellore constituency had been countermanded.
On 30 March, Income-Tax raids were carried out in the Vellore residence of DMK candidate and party treasurer Durai Murugan’s son, Kathir Anand, and Rs 10 lakh excess amount was seized. On April 1-2, more raids unearthed Rs 11.48 crore – neatly packed in convenient packets – from the house of DMK functionary, Poonjolai Srinivasan’s sister. Srinivasan is a friend of Durai Murugan.
The police were informed that the Srinivasan told the I-T officials that the money was meant for distribution to voters. The police then registered cases against Kathir Anand, Srinivasan and his sister’s husband Damodaran under two sections.
At this juncture, there was widespread speculation about the EC taking action and countermanding the election in Vellore constituency. Some media houses even carried news stating that the election had been countermanded.
Today, the EC denied that it had taken any such action.
