Fort St George

Chennai: While the AIADMK is keen to retain power, the Opposition DMK is determined to make a comeback at Fort St George after the results of by-elections in 22 constituencies are announced 23 May.

Hence, both the Dravidian majors are already planning a lot of things in the backroom. And, open remarks by DMK treasurer Durai Murugan and State Minister K T Rajenthra Bhalaji indicate horse-trading is also on the cards.

The senior AIADMK leader, who is Dairy Development Minister in the Tamilnadu Cabinet, has claimed that 40 MLAs belonging to the DMK are willing to defect to the AIADMK.

Rajenthra Bhalaji

“Come 23 May, the AIADMK government will turn over a new leaf. DMK president M K Stalin is trying to form a government through the backdoor. But the DMK will disappear after the election results are revealed,” he said.

In a similar vein, Durai Murugan had recently said, “I will make sure that this government falls after 23 May. I had learnt politics from Kalaignar (former DMK president M Karunanidhi) and I will make use of it to ensure the DMK comes to power and Stalin becomes the Chief Minister.”

Durai Murugan

S Ravi, a professor and a political analyst, says, “These comments by Durai Murugan and Rajenthra Bhalaji can’t be viewed as ordinary political speeches. It seems we are going to witness a big political gamble after 23 May, given the thirst for power in both camps.”

Highly-placed sources in the AIADMK said all their MLAs are in support of Palaniswami and (Deputy Chief Minister) O Panneerselvam. “But, we are not ready for any chance and will ensure the government gets the required majority after the results are announced.”

Sources in DMK headquarters Anna Arivalayam said, “Those who hitherto criticised Stalin, saying he lacked smartness, will be proved wrong after 23 May.”

So, is Tamilnadu getting ready for ‘resort politics’ once again?
