Gunasekaran

Chennai: Proving that age is no barrier to pursue one’s passion, 66-year-old Gunasekaran, has been wowing many with his art.

The resident of Purushothaman Nagar, Chrompet, specialises in painting sceneries with themes related to saving the environment.

Excerpts from his interview:

Q) Tell us about yourself.
A) I worked as a sales development manager at a private firm and retired six years ago. After retirement, I had ample time in hand. So I decided to pursue my childhood interest of painting.

Q) How did it feel to paint after such a long break?
A) The first time I tried my hands at it after several decades, I found it difficult to control and balance the brush. But eventually, I got the flow and knack of it. Since I love nature, I paint only things related to the environment.

Q) How many expos have you conducted or attended so far?
A) I attend art exhibitions every year, especially the international expo in Bengaluru. I have also showcased my works in several events held in our city. Recently, Tamilnadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit purchased my paintings to decorate his house. It was a happy moment.

Q) How important is art to man?
A) Like yoga, painting has many health benefits. It is a stress reliever. At this age, whenever I feel down or depressed, I begin to paint what ever comes to my mind immediately. It calms me down and makes me happy.

Q) How supportive is your family?
A) My wife accompanies me every time to events and also offers suggestions in my work.

Q) What are your plans for the coming days?
A) I am planning to take classes for deserving students. Interested people can reach me, I’ll teach them the nuances of art.

Q) What do you suggest to aspiring artists?
A) I want people to follow their heart and put their soul to whatever they are doing. I also wish parents and schools provide adequate opportunities for youngsters to pursue art.
