Chennai: The Congress is pressurising only me, charged the party’s suspended South Chennai district president Karate R Thiagarajan.

Speaking to mediapersons after meeting party senior P Chidambaram at his Nungambakkam residence in Chennai this morning, Thiagarajan said he was being singled out for the treatment.

He said though MLA Vijayadharini had praised Prime Minister Modi, no action was taken against her. But what he said at an internal meeting of the Congress was being blown out of proportion and he was being penalised, he said.

Thiagarajan had recently said at the meeting that the Congress should go it alone in the coming civic elections, at least in wards in South Chennai district that came under him. He pointed out to the media later that this observation was leaked and the DMK saw it as the Congress breaking away from the alliance.

It even led to an angry DMK MLA K N Nehru questioning the need for continuing the alliance with the Congress.

This led to the All India Congress Committee (TNCC) suspending Thiagarajan for anti-party activities and indiscipline.

As he supposedly belongs to the Chidambaram faction in the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, Thiagarajan met him this morning.

Speaking to the media outside Chidambaram’s residence, he said he was not sure if party president Rahul Gandhi was aware that he had been suspended. He added that he will always be loyal to the party and Rahul.

He faulted TNCC president K S Alagiri for suspending him without seeking his explanation.
