Chennai: Improper clearance of garbage has become a major concern throughout Madipakkam of late. Residents have raised a lot complaints to authorities, yet no action has been taken.
When officials do act, progress occurs at a snail’s pace, allege residents. Now, another problem has popped up in the neighbourhood. It pertains to the garbage bins that were placed upside down throughout the locality. Till date, the issue has not been redressed.
According to residents, people have been dumping domestic wastes on the road ever since the issue started.
Residents of Ponniyamman Kovil Street, Vembuli Amman Kovil Street and Karthikeyapuram, opined that stray dogs and cattle eat plastic from these wastes and scatter them. They claim that the garbage eventually ends up near the entrances of houses.
A few residents said the issue poses a threat to the health of the residents and makes the streets look nasty. Grievances of these residents were not heard by the officials concerned.
Narayanamoorthy, a resident of Vembuli Amman Kovil Street, said, “The bins are still placed upside down. Though Corporation personnel clear the waste everyday, more garbage accumulates. With it raining everyday, water stagnates near these bins, making it easy for mosquitoes to breed. Communicable diseases like flu and dengue spreads easily during rainy seasons.”
“Roadside drainage are not closed channels. If we get another heavy downpour, these wastes will flow into the drainage and get clogged. This will result in water getting stagnated in the streets. Immediate action should be taken to avoid unwanted consequences in the coming days,” he concluded.
