Chennai: Residents are excited as the monsoon has started and the cloud pours down everyday. But, the roads of the locality are damaged and the water is stagnant throughout the area.
Motorists and pedestrians find it difficult to commute, as the stagnant water makes the road slippery and risky to drive or walk.
“Monsoon has just started and we have had only a few spells of rain, but look at the conditions of the roads, it’s pathetic already. Not only this road, even Medavakkam Main Road, is flooded,” says Sabrina, a resident of Pari street.
Selvaraj, who runs a shop at Medavakkam Main road near Axis bank bus stop, says, “On any given day, there is heavy traffic in this road, especially during peak hours. To add to it, the road is now wet and slippery. With the road having been damaged already, a few muddy patches on it contribute to minor accidents everyday. People tend to skid and fall from their vehicles.”
Not only is the Medavakkam Main Road flooded, residential areas too are no exceptions, said Shanmugam, a resident.
“Many parts of Ganesh Nagar, Malligai Nagar, Brindhavan Nagar are also facing the issue. School students are worst hit,” he added.
Mullai, another resident, said, “Pedestrians can’t use the roads as there is no footpath and water stands on them. All these days, we had water shortage. And now that we have water, the roads are now giving us problems. The officials concerned should take necessary actions.”
“What if we receive heavy rains like how we did in 2015, 2016 and 2017? It is better to foresee and plan for the unexpected,” he added.
