VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan and executive vice provost for International Initiatives and Global Officer, Binghamton University, Professor Krishnaswami Srihari with the agreement copy in Vellore, Thursday. VIT vice-president Sankar Viswanathan is present.

Vellore: Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in collaboration with State University of New York, Binghamton USA is setting up Centre of Excellence for Autonomous Vehicle Research at VIT.

VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan said VIT and State University of New York, Binghamton USA will establish world class autonomous and intelligent driving system with the state-of-the art facilities to meet the critical challenges.

Addressing the media here Thursday, Viswanathan informed that VIT and Thomas J Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science of State University of New York, (SUNY), Binghamton USA, signed an agreement that will lead to a 3.5+1.5 year programme (on credit transfer mode) where the students of VIT will earn a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree from VIT and a Master of Science (MS) degree from Binghamton.

Professor Krishnaswami Srihari, executive vice provost for International Initiatives and Global Officer, Binghamton University, said that VIT and Watson School of SUNY Binghamton had over nine years of association and this partnership helped in organising joint conferences, student and faculty mobility and collaborated on research and established international transfer 2+2 degree programmes (two years at VIT and two years at Binghamton). Watson school will support VIT in future research collaborations to develop technology for autonomous vehicles.

VIT vice-president Sankar Viswanathan said both the institutions would focus on cooperative autonomous driving system, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), cooperation & coordination, human factors, verification & validation and autonomous robotics.

VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan and executive vice president for academic affairs and Provost, Binghamton University Donald Nieman signed the agreement 24 June 2019 during Viswanathan’s visit to Binghamton University.
