The height of the bridge constructed on Sixth Main Road, Eri Scheme, poses a problem to people.

Chennai: Work on bridges constructed on Sixth Main Road, Eri Scheme, Kavimani Salai, Mugappair West Main Road and First Main Road, Mugappair, across the open canal that runs between Ambattur Industrial Estate and Coovum River, was completed recently.

The barricades kept to block the entry of vehicles too were removed. But, the motorists who want to cross the bridges find it difficult to do so as they are constructed little higher than the road level.

Speaking to News Today, B Indersingh, president of VGN Avenue Residents Welfare Association, said, “First, we thank the officials for taking necessary measures to construct the bridges. Construction work was completed a few days ago and motorists are allowed to pass through. But, many find it difficult.”

The road level is lower than the bridge so it is difficult for motorists to climb, he added. Some of the motorists knowing the danger move through inner streets and use other roads.

“Contractors who constructed the bridges should have applied cement between the bridge and road on both sides,” said, Vadivelu, a motorist.

“After completion of bridge work, no steps were taken to clean the place. The gravel, sand, and cement particles are not removed and they cause danger to motorists,” he added.

Shanthi, a resident of Eri Scheme, said, “The height of the bridge is increased to drain the rainwater quickly during floods. When Corporation relays the road, the height will equal the bridge. But that will take time.”

Ponraj, a school boy, said, “Recently, one of my friends, while riding his bicycle on this bridge, fell on the road as he couldn’t balance it. From that day onwards, I stopped riding on this bridge, I carry my bicycle at this spot. If I ride over it, definitely the wheels will bend and lead to huge expense.”
A Corporation official, said, “We will inform the contractors and find a solution for it.”
