Chennai: P L Usha Margabandu, a longtime resident of Tilak Street, Panneer Nagar, Mugappair West, is worried after seeing the Mangal lake wearing a dry look with no water.
“It is distressing to see that our Mangal lake is so dry and nobody is taking any action to deepen it before the rainy season. We have many residents, factories, industries, NGOs, BPOs, Rotary Club, Lion Club and schools in this area. None of them seem to be taking any action to improve this lake. Many youth and others use this park too,” she said.
“As this lake seems to be small, government does not seem to be interested in developing it. My sincere wish is that if we deepen it before the rainy season, not only the ground water level will rise. If it is developed, I am sure this lake will be the most relaxing place in the surrounding,” she added.
Usha said, “I contacted Environmental Foundation of India founder Arun Krishnamurthy and told him about the present condition of the lake. He informed that 25 lakes were adopted for cleaning work, so they are concentrating on it. Getting permission from the government will take long time and the foundation is also seeking help from volunteers.”
“I request the officials concerned to arrange for recharge well on each street, it will definitely increase the ground water level and also help us to avoid flood. Storm water drains must be connected with the waterbodies like Mangal lake and nearby ponds,” she wished.
She also mentioned that youngsters and NSS students in the neighbourhood should come forward to clean the lake. They can spend at least two hours in a week to this project.
“It’s our lake, only we have to take necessary steps to restore it and beautify the park in it. I hope to see some action taken,” she concluded.
