Corpn officials fence walls around open canal in Chennai

Fencing on open canal prevents people from dumping garbage.

Chennai: The height of walls constructed on both sides of the open canal that runs through Ambattur Industrial Estate, Mugappair East and West was only two feet above the ground level. Hence, some residents threw garbage in the canal. Now, the Corporation has taken steps to do fencing work to avoid dumping waste.

“First, I thank the officials for taking necessary steps to do fencing work to protect this canal from dumping garbage. I am residing here for a long time and know about this canal very well. Initially, it was in bad condition. I also thank News Today for publishing many articles about this canal, which is root cause for the development,” said, Gopi, a resident.

He also mentioned that protecting this canal in a residential area is not an easy job. Only this fencing can help officials to maintain this canal clean. Polythene and other particles dumped into this canal blocked the free flow of water.

Shanthi, another resident said, “We are happy to see walls on both sides on this canal. I saw some residents dumping garbage into the waterbody. I explained to them the difficulties in maintaining the long canal.”

“After fencing this canal, people are now dumping garbage near the wall. It is easy for the civic workers to clean it and maintain the street neatly,” she added.

A Corporation official, said, “Many times we informed and warned the residents living on the side of this canal not to dump garbage into it. But, a few of them were not bothered about the environment. So, we did some grill work on the wall to 10 feet height.”
