Chennai: Film director and cancer survivor Ramana has alleged the city traffic police fined him when he did not violate any rule and also made disrespectful comments about his health condition.
In a Facebook post, the filmmaker said that he has good friends in the police department and most of the policemen are honest. But he recently had a bitter encounter with two policemen he identified as Sub Inspector (SI) Kumaran and Constable M Ramar, whom he wrote “were not even humane.”
He said that policemen were pulling up traffic violators at Santhome near his residence. He was driving his four-wheeler with his wife and daughter and took a ‘U’ turn when his vehicle was stopped for traffic violation.
“It was SI Kumaran who asked Constable Ramar to levy a fine on me even as I repeatedly said I had not violated any rule,” he said. However, things hit a low when Kumaran allegedly passed shocking comments at Ramana’s health condition.
“He asked me to stay away from him as he did not want to get cancer which he termed as a contagious disease,” Ramana said. The SI further asked Ramar not to bring “those who are going to die” to him.
“This hurt my feelings and I strongly condemn it”, he wrote in the post. “There was a kind policemen at the spot who asked us to leave without paying the fine and we left. But I had left with my original driving license with the policemen which my daughter offered to go back and collect.”
The filmmaker said that his daughter who went to collect it was made to wait for a long time and Kumaran gave the license to her only after she paid the fine.
His post has been going viral in social media and on WhatsApp. Ramana made his debut as director in 2003 with Vijay starrer Thirumalai. He followed it up with Sullan with Dhanush in the lead and another Vijay movie Aathi. He was diagnosed with throat cancer and has been recovering from it.
