Chennai: “In India, there are over 60 grandmasters in Chess, currently. The number is low when compared to Russia and other such countries. All I aim is to increase this number and produce some qualifies chess grandmasters to our country,”’ says Jebastin, a resident of Porur.

Born in Tuticorin, Jebastin playfully started playing chess with his school friends. Jebastin says, “‘Every time I lose in my game, I learnt a lesson. This made me move further and study more details in the game of chess. Gradually, playing chess become my passion. I played a number of tournaments and got many awards. Now, it is time to give it back. And so, I chose to coach the children and aiming to provide qualifies chess players.’”

RATED PLAYERS IN MAKING

Jebastin started a chess academy, less than a year ago but in a short period of time, he has a bunch of players who have won a series of tournaments. He says, ‘”Think to Win Chess Academy was started with the vision of creating more FIDE rated players in our nation and strengthen the student’s creative skills, memory skills through our well prepared professional courses (Level I, Level II, Level III). Currently, there are 80 students studying in our academy.’”

He adds, “‘Of them, Gowtham Krishna, a student here recently won the title in the open category at 3rd rating change tournament-2019. Other students, Suryaa won the title in U-8 category and Kavya Varshini also won the title in U-6 Category in the same tournaments. Apart from this, we have also conducted three rating change tournaments (academic level) and one championship tournament (academic level).’”

CHESS SHARPENS THE BRAIN

The chess coach says, “‘Many children are addicted to tabs and cell phones these days. This blunts their brain, making them less active. However, students here are capable of solving tactical chess problems and eager to learn more about the game. Their ultimate aim is to become a grandmaster in chess. We are guiding them towards their goal.’”

He states, ‘”According to me, Chess is completely a talent oriented game there is no place for luck to win in this game. While comparing most of the other games, chess will definitely improve our concentration and academic skills.’”

BIG PLANS

Talking about coaching students who are financially backward, he says, “‘In future, we are also planning to coach poor students. Talent is everywhere and we will find those skilled students and teach them.’”
