Chennai: As the week started on a wet note today courtesy rains, the Regional Metereological Department has said that coastal areas in Tamilnadu and Puducherry are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rains for the next three days due to the low pressure in Bay of Bengal.
Fishermen are not advised to venture into the seas for two days as the wind blows at the speed of 55 km.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has urged the Collectors of southern districts in the State to be prepared for the rains.
He has instructed them to shift people living in low-lying areas to special camps. The Chief Minister has told the officials to report to him on the impact of the Northeast monsoon immediately.
Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Theni, Erode, Dindigul and Ramanathapuram are among the districts that are likely to receive rainfall today and tomorrow. Chennai’s Nungambakkam recorded 101 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours.
The department stated that Chennai and suburbs are likely to continue receiving light showers for two days.
In view of the heavy showers, Kanyakumari and Coimbatore districts have declared a holiday for schools today. The Collector of Sivaganga announced leave to the schools in its district separately.
Coastal areas in the State are receiving rains as the clouds are moving towards Tamilnadu from Andhra Pradesh, the department stated.
As per an official release, Kuzhithurai in Kanyakumari received the highest amount of rainfall of 14 cm, followed by Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore with 12 cm.
