Four persons held for ‘maanja’ death in Korukkupet

Chennai: The city police today arrested four persons who allegedly used the deadly maanja thread that claimed the life of a three-year-old boy.

According to the police, the accused were identified as Nagaraj (20), Lokesh (24), Charles and a 17-year-old. They belong to Korukkupet and Kasimedu.

It may be noted that yesterday, the victim, Abhineshwar Rao of Kondithope was on his way back home from his relative’s house in Tondiarpet in a two-wheeler with his father Gopal, when the maanja
thread swinging from a post on Korukkupet flyover slit his throat.

Gopal rushed him to Government Stanley Hospital, but could not save Abhineshwar.

Maanja thread is a banned item used in kite flying matches to cut a competitor’s kite. Following the latest incident, police have launched a crackdown against shops selling maanja.

In August, one Sarwan suffered injuries after maanja thread slit his throat when he was going in a two-wheeler with his father Saravanan in Tambaram.

In December last year, Dr M Saravanan of Venkatesan Nagar in Kolathur, a neuro surgeon at RGGGH, suffered injuries after a maanja thread slit his throat at ICF.
