Chennai: Timely act by passersby helped in catching a man who was trying to break open an ATM vault at Avadi here last night.
According to sources, a man identified as Udaya Surya of Thirumullaivoyal was trying to rob the ATM belonging to Punjab National Bank at Muthapudupet near Avadi.
As he was trying to break the vault, passersby saw it and stopped him. They informed the police who arrived and took him into custody. The ATM did not have a security guard at the time of the incident.
