New Delhi: The Supreme Court today started hearing a plea by the DMK seeking to strike down the election notification for local body polls in Tamilnadu, issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) on 2 December, 2019.
Appearing for the DMK, senior counsel Abishek Manu Singhvi sought a direction to stay the local body poll notification and orders to the State Election Commission to carry out the delimitation exercise in the newly created districts before conducting the elections.
The petitioner sought a direction that the notification issued by the Tamilnadu State Election Commission of 2 December should be struck down since the delimitation exercise was not carried out in the newly created districts.
It is to be noted that the Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s plea seeking a direction to the Election Commission to carry out the delimitation exercise in newly created districts in Tamilnadu before conducting panchayat and local body elections.
