Chennai: Putting an end to two years of hearing in the Ayanavaram gang rape case, a Mahila court in Chennai today convicted 15 out of the 16 accused persons.
The court acquitted gardener Gunasekaran (55). As many as 17 men were arrested in 2018 for repeatedly raping a minor girl. All 17 of them were employed at the apartment complex that the girl lived in at Ayanavaram.
Out of this one of them passed away during the course of the investigation. The case was reported in July 2018 and on 6 September City Commissioner A K Viswanathan passed orders to book all the accused under Goondas.
However, the Goondas Act was later revoked by the Madras High Court. The case was tried under the POCSO act. More than 300-page charge sheet was filed on 16 September 2018. The minor girl was repeatedly raped at her apartment complex for six months.
