Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today announced that former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s birthday on 24 February will be celebrated as State Girl Children Protection Day.

He also made announcements for the benefit of the minorities in the State. The announcements were made in the Assembly today under the Rule 110. Palaniswami announced five schemes for the betterment of the life of destitute girls.

”Girls who are growing in government run homes, those without parents and guardians will be given Rs two lakh after they complete 21 years. This amount will be deposited in their bank account. This will ensure that they are able to lead a good life in the society,” he said.

He further said if girls who leave the government homes and do not have parents or guardians face financial problems, the government will provide them a special help fund. ”This fund can be used to pursue higher studies, skill development training and to do business. This package will be given till they reach the age of 50,” he added.

Palaniswami also said the amount of Rs 2,000 which is given to foster parents after the first three years will be increased to Rs 4,000 and given for five years. ”Awards will be given to district managements that work for better sex ratio,” he added.

Making announcements for the minorities, Palaniswami said the monthly pension amount for Ulamas will be increased by Rs 1,500 to 3,000. ”A new Haj building at a cost of Rs 15 crore will be constructed at the land allocated by Tamilnadu Wakf board,” he added.

He further said Ulamas working in registered Wakf organisations will be given two wheelers at a subsidised price.

Meanwhile, DMK today staged a walkout after they were denied permission to discuss the breach of privilege brought against Tamil Development Minister K Pandiarajan.

It may be noted that the Opposition party staged a walkout yesterday too for the same reason. The motion was brought by DMK’s Thangam Thennarasu against Pandiarajan’s statement that it is possible to get dual citizenship for Srilankan Tamils.
