Chennai: Tamilnadu Transport Minister M R Vijayabhaskar told newsmen at Karur that a total of 29 people, who attended the religious congregation at Delhi, have been admitted to the isolation ward in the Karur Government Medical College Hospital here, due to corona symptoms.

He said a 42-year-old resident of Kulithalai in Karur district, who attended the religious conference tested positive for Covid-19, making him the first confirmed case of the pandemic in the district and the resultant admissions were said to be his local contacts.

Soon after the patient tested positive for Covid-19, special teams visited various parts of the district and traced 29 persons. All of them were quarantined and their swabs have been sent for analysis.

Besides Karur, three other patients, who had returned to Tamilnadu after attending the religious conference, had been put in the isolation ward in the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchirapalli and a government hospital in Chennai.

Special teams have been formed to trace their contacts. Many of them had been identified and asked to remain in home quarantine.

Health workers would visit their houses to ascertain whether any of them had cold, fever and breathing difficulties. If any such cases were detected, they would be immediately sent to the isolation ward, the Minister said.
