Chennai: In a bid to strictly enforce social distancing norms, the Greater Chennai Corporation has formed flying squads to monitor shops.

The civic body has ordered to seal vegetable stores, provision stores and meat shops, if they do not follow social distancing protocols.

The Corporation has said that police and officials will be patrolling the city in the mornings and evenings and severe action will be taken if the rules are violated. The staff has also asked to be on vigil and will be taken to task if they do not book violators.

It may be noted that, on 5 April, Chennai Corporation officials inspected meat shops and sealed those that were not adhering to the rules of social distancing.

As many as 52 meat shops were asked to down shutters and 435 kilograms of meat was seized. Officials said the violating shops will have to keep the shutters closed for three months as punishment.
