Chennai: The Greater Chennai Police have decided to levy Rs 500 as for two-wheeler riders who move without masks in the city. Rs 100 will be collected from pedestrians, sources said.
Today, Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan monitored the traffic regulations and requested cooperation from people to check the spread of Covid-19. He also distributed masks to pavement dwellers and other people.
The city may record 10,000 cases of Covid-19 in a day or two.
The high rates of coronavirus cases are due to aggressive testing, officials say, in a bid to allay the fears of people.
Areas such as Royapuram, Kodambakkam and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar have more than 1,000 cases and Alandur remains as the only place with double digit number of patients.
Until yesterday, 66 deaths were reported in the city since the lockdown in March.
There are 8795 active Coronavirus patients in the city. According to data from the Greater Chennai Corporation today, the number of Covid-19 cases in Royapuram stands at 1,699, the highest in the city.
