Chennai: In a tragic first night incident, a newly married man killed his wife and later committed suicide by hanging from a tree in the northern suburb of Minjur in neighbouring Tiruvallur district.
Sources said today that Neethivasan (24) and Sandhya (20) were relatives and they entered into a wedlock yesterday in a low key marriage in view of the coronavirus lockdown.
In the night, family members heard screams of Sandhya and went into the room and found her lying in a pool of blood.
She was attacked by a crowbar on her head and her throat was slit. She bled to death on the spot. The crowbar was recovered from the spot.
As police, acting on information from their relatives, launched a manhunt to trace Neethivasan, he was found hanging from a tree in the locality.
Police shifted the bodies to the Ponneri Government Hospital for postmortem. Police were probing the reason for the murder and suicide.
