Chennai: On the first of the new lockdown, the Tamilnadu police arrested large number of violators who stepped out despite restrictions being put in place.

Till this morning, they have arrested as many as 6,63,772 persons for violating norms of curfew.

The restrictions have been imposed across the State to curb the spread of coronavirus since 24 March, and the latest curfew is imposed to bring down the spike of Covid-19 cases.

A press release from the DGP’s office said that 6,14,061 violations have been recorded by the police in various districts. As many as 4,80,838 vehicles were seized.

However, the vehicles are being returned to their owners in a phased manner. A total amount of Rs 13,60,16,335 has been collected from violators as fine since the first lockdown.
