Chennai: A young doctor of Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital committed suicide at the hospital premises in the wee hours of today.
According to police sources, the doctor was identified as Kannan (27), a first year Post Graduate student in Orthopedic surgery department. He is a native of Udumalaipettai.
He jumped from the third floor of the hostel building located opposite to the hospital campus. The incident took place between 3-4 am. He died on the spot and the cause of death was head injury.
Even as there was no suicide note left between, close friends of Kannan told police that Kannan was distressed over a marriage proposal.
However, a section of doctors also allege that it could be due to work stress. A doctor said that they were made to work for 24-30 hours at a stretch and many doctors were physically and mentally exhausted.
A Public Interest Litigation is being filed in this regard. Police have sent his body for post-mortem to Government Stanley Hospital. Seven Wells police are investigating the case.
