Chennai: Tamilnadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today laid foundation stone for a museum in Keezhadi, in Sivaganga district.
According to government sources, the world class museum will be set up at a cost of Rs 12.25 crore.
Earlier this month, four weighing stones of different sizes and spherical in shape have been unearthed from Keeladi excavation site.
Deputy Director of Archaeology R Sivanandam said they had discovered the stones over one week. One stone was discovered on 25 June at a depth of 1.22 meters in one of the quadrants. It was spherical in shape and black in colour.
Also, skeletal remains of another child were excavated at Konthagai as part of the sixth phase of ongoing excavations in the ancient site of Keezhadi. The child’s skeleton was located only around 0.5 metres from the remains of the first child which were found on 19 June.
Sivanandam said it was found around two weeks ago because of its proximity to the skeleton of the first child. It was 95 cm in height and located about one metre below ground. This too, like in the case of the first child they found, was a surface burial, he said.
Keezhadi excavation site is a Sangam period settlement that is being excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Tamilnadu Archaeology Department. This site is located 12 km southeast of Madurai in Tamilnadu.
