Collect only 20% electricity bills from industries, HC tells TANGEDCO

Chennai, Aug 14: The Madras High Court today directed the TANGEDCO to charge lesser current bills for industries till the end of the Covid-19 induced lockdown.

With several companies resuming after almost three months, a petition was filed in the Madras High Court stating that the industries have to pay more electricity bill.

Taking up the case for hearing today, Justice Anand Venkatesh said that the TANGEDCO must collect only 20 per cent of the electricity bill from the industries. ‘If the money has been collected already, it should be compensated in
the upcoming bills,’he said. He also said that this is however not applicable to administrative offices of the industries.

‘Forcing industries to pay entire current bill will only force many companies to shutdown. It is like cutting the goose which lays golden eggs,’ he said.
