Chennai: Though the Tamilnadu government has announced that inter-district bus and train operations will commence in the State from 7 September, there is no clarity over the resuming of suburban train services in Chennai, which is the lifeline of tens of thousands.
Railway officials said a decision on this will be taken and announced in the next few days. Inter-district bus transport and passenger train services within Tamilnadu would be permitted from 7 September, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced on Wednesday, a day after large-scale relaxations in Covid-19 lockdown curbs came into effect.
In a statement, he said that while public and private bus transport were allowed onlywithin districts from Tuesday, there were representations from the public seeking facilitation of services to travel from one district to another and hence the decision to further ease curbs.
Considering public welfare, inter-district government andprivate bus transport will be allowed across Tamilnadu following the Standard Operating Procedure from 7 September,’ he added.
Similarly, from the same date, passenger train services within the state shall be permitted, he said. Inter-state train services are already operational in permitted routes. Metrorail has already been given the nod for resuming operations in the city from 7 September.
