Chennai: After an unprecedented gap of 170 days, Tamilnadu resumed public transportation today with the operations of Metro Rail in Chennai and inter-district bus and train services.
Starting this morning, Metro Rail is back in the metropolis and buses started to various parts of the State from the Koyambedu terminus. Strict Covid-19 protocols are in place.
The State Express Transport Corporation (SETC), which caters to long distance commuters, has decided to introduce non-AC buses linking various parts of the state with Chennai.
“Considering public welfare, inter-district government and private bus transport will be allowed across Tamil Nadu following the Standard Operating Procedure from 7 September,” Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said in a statement last week.
Similarly, from the same date, passenger train services within the state shall be permitted, he said. Inter-State train services are already operational in permitted routes.
