New York: Serena Williams pulled off another comeback win at the US Open on Monday, ensuring the weakened Grand Slam event didn’t lose a legendary player for a second consecutive day. Serena Williams trailed familiar foe Maria Sakkari by a break early in the third set before turning the tables for a 6-3 6-7 (6) 6-3 victory on Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach the quarterfinals at a Grand Slam for a 53rd time, tying Martina Navratilova for second on the all-time women’s list.
In a US Open with filled with epic matches and intriguing storylines, Daniil Medvedev is taking a drama-free path through the draw.
The third seed continued his stellar form on Monday by ending the run of Frances Tiafoe with a convincing 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 win. Medvedev grabbed the last eight games and took 17 of the last 20 points.
The fourth-round US Open clash between second seed Dominic Thiem and No. 15 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime received plenty of hype before they stepped on court. Once Thiem found his footing on Monday inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, the second seed extinguished any hopes of a classic battle.
Stepping inside the court to crank groundstroke winners and picking the right moments to finish points at the net, Thiem raced through 12 of the last 14 games to end Auger-Aliassime’s Grand Slam breakthrough with a 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-1 win. The Austrian advanced to his second quarter-final in New York and improved to 18-6 at this event.
I was really nervous before the match. I knew that I was going to play against an amazing opponent, Thiem said on court after the match.
