Chennai: Egg prices have hit a record high in Namakkal, the wholesale market for eggs in Tamilnadu, resulting in a sharp spike of retail rates in other parts of the State.
While egg is being sold at Namakkal for Rs 5.25 per piece, people are buying it for anywhere between Rs 7 and Rs 8 per egg in retail markets across Tamilnadu.
If the same trend continues, hotels, restaurants and bakeries are also expected to increase prices of egg-based products.
In the wake of shortage in production mainly due to Covid-19 restrictions, the price of both eggs and chicken are likely to remain high till end of October and may come down later depending on the supply.
The loss incurred during the lockdown to the poultry industry is said to be a few thousands of crores of rupees.
According to Tamilnadu Egg Poultry Marketing Society President Vangli Subramanian, “Due to the lockdown, the farmers were unable to transport eggs to other States. Even now, the business is yet to return to normalcy.”
