Chennai: Even as expelled AIADMK leader V K Sasikala is expected to come out of jail soon, her assets to the tune of around Rs 2,000 crore have been attached by the Income Tax department.

Sasikala, who was jailed in 2017 in a disproportionate assets case in which the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was the prime accused, is scheduled to be released from Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara jail in a month of two, months before the Tamilnadu Assembly elections.

Her assets including bungalows at Siruthavur on the outskirts of Chennai and at Kodanad in the Nilgiris were attached by the Benami Prohibition wing of the Income Tax Department.

It is said that a notice had been served to Sasikala at the Parappana Agrahara Prison in Bengaluru, the benami company and the various Sub-Registrar Offices (SROs) under whose jurisdiction the properties are situated.

The Kodanad tea estate in the Nilgiris district is a 906-acre property, which belonged to British citizen Peter Jones and his family until 1994. Later, it was acquired by Sasikala and her family. The Siruthavur bungalow was bought in 1991 in the name of Bharani Beach Resorts Private Ltd, a company owned by Sasikala and her relatives.
