Chennai: A recent study has indicated that the Milky Way might have once housed aliens, but most of them are dead due to their own science and technology.
“As early as 1961, Hoerner (1961) suggests that the progress of science and technology will inevitably lead to complete destruction 11 and biological degeneration, similar to the proposal by Sagan and Shklovskii (1966). This is further supported by many previous studies arguing that self-annihilation of humans is highly possible via various scenarios,” the study said.
It said, “We found the potential self-annihilation to be highly influential in the quantity of galactic intelligent life. If intelligent life is likely to destroy themselves, it is not surprising that there is little or no intelligent life elsewhere.”
The study came after the researchers calculated the likely existence of intelligent life and determined aliens may have emerged some eight billion years after the Milky Way galaxy formed.
Since humans are yet to make contact with alien life, the researchers included in the study that the progress of science and technology might have resulted in the destruction of civilisations.
The researchers also found that if there are aliens elsewhere in the galaxy, they are ‘still too young to be observed by us’ or too far from Earth.
Recently, a team of scientists for the first time collected a potential radio signal from a planet beyond our solar system. The first possible radio signal is believed to be emanating from an exoplanet system about 51 light-years away.
The researchers also observed other potential exoplanetary radio-emission candidates in the constellation Cancer and Upsilon Andromedae systems.
