New Delhi: Amid reports of post-poll violence from several districts of West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called up West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankar and BJP national President J P Nadda flew to the State to visit families of those killed.

The Centre has mounted pressure on the TMC government over the incidents, with Modi calling up Dhankhar and the Union Home Ministry seeking a report from its state counterpart.

The BJP blamed the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which won a thumping victory in assembly elections two days ago, for the violence that affected at least six districts and said ruling party goons attacked women and killed BJP workers. The party also approached the Supreme Court demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the violence.

More than 12 have been reportedly killed and many attacked while several families have fled their homes, according to BJP.

Meanwhile, accusing BJP of ‘growing desperate for President’s rule’ and instigating the postpoll ‘communal clashes; that have also claimed five TMC workers and one from the ISF, Mamata Banerjee vowed to ‘tackle the situation’ after taking oath on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Nadda said after visiting a slain BJP worker’s ‘wailing mother’ he was shocked at some in TMC ‘discounting these incidents as stunts’.

BJP asked its national secretaries to reach out to all families ‘battered in this unprecedented state-sponsored violence’.
