New Delhi: The Union government late on Tuesday night appointed Maharashtra cadre IPS officer of 1985 batch, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, currently Director General of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), as CBI Director for two years.
According to an official notification, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has, based on the panel recommended by the committee constituted as per Section 4A(1) of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, approved the appointment of Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (Mh-1985) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office.”
Jaiswal is widely experienced, having served as Maharashtra Director-General of Police before he was made the CISF chief, and also served in the CBI earlier.
He has been chosen from a panel of three officers shortlisted by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led high-level selection committee consisting of the Chief Justice of India as well as leader of the largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha.
A low-profile officer, Jaiswal was attached with R&AW for ten years during which he assisted the probe into the 2008 Mumbai attacks and helped document the role of Pakistan’s non-state actors. In 2017, the Maharashtra Home department wrote to him asking if he would be interested in returning to Maharashtra. As the Gadchiroli SP, Jaiswal had stepped up operations against Maoists.
Jaiswal also was with the Special Protection Group and was responsible for the security of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
