Chennai ATM thefts: City cops continue hunt in Haryana


Chennai: Greater Chennai police personnel camping in Haryana on the trail of the gang that targeted SBI ATMs in the city are continuing their search with the help of local police.

According to sources, they have identified five suspects besides the man arrested and brought to Chennai on Thursday.

“There are some practical difficulties. But still, Chennai police team is hopeful of nabbing the suspects,” sources said.

A special team of Greater Chennai Police on Wednesday arrested a key member of the gang that targeted automated teller machines (ATMs) of SBI across the city from Mewat district in Haryana.

“The accused Aamir Allimuddin, is from a village known for fraudulent activities. He also has several cases pending against him,” a senior police officer said. “A sum of Rs 4.5 lakh has been seized from Aamir,” he added.

As many as 14 cases of such fraud in SBI ATMs have taken place in the city from 15-18 June, a police release here said, adding, more than five groups of people seemed to be involved in the crime.

“Around Rs 45 lakh was syphoned off. In the course of investigation, the special team arrested one Amir Arsh of Ballabhgarh (Haryana) with the help of the Haryana State police,” the release said.
