Chennai: Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences has signed an MOU with University of Basel, Switzerland on cleft and cranio facial surgery, research and didactic purpose in the presence of Jonas Brunschwig, Consulate General of Switzerland, Swissnex in India and Dr Saveetha Rajesh, medical director, SMCH.
The MOU was signed by Dr Andreas A Mueller, BRCCH (Botnar Research Centre for Child Health) Principal Investigator, University Hospital Basel and Prof R V M Surya Rao, chief of plastic surgery services, SMCH.
This collaborative research project focuses on an optimal treatment strategy with minimal burden for the patient and healthcare system. The digital 3D shape of the cleft will be reconstructed with photogrammetry and data-driven algorithms, guiding the computation of individualised palatal orthopaedic plates that can then be fabricated with 3D printing.
