Chennai: Buoyed by the success of the mega camps organised last two Sundays during which more than 45 lakh people were inoculated, the Tamilnadu government on Sunday organised the third camp targetting to vaccinate 15 lakh people across the State in a bid to prevent possible emergence of a third wave.
However, at the end of the day, the State vaccinated 24.85 lakh people. There will be no vaccination drive today. Tamilnadu conducted 23,436 camps in all the districts.
Ever since the vaccination started at 7 am, people turned out in large numbers in the more than 20,000 booths set up by the government.
In the first camp held on 12 September, the government targetted to inoculate 20 lakh people. Surpassing the target a total of 28,91,021 people were vaccinated with 21,48,526 getting the first dose and 7,42,495 getting the
second dose.
In the second camp held on 19 September, the 15 lakh vaccination target was surpassed with a total of 16,43,879 people getting vaccine jabs. This included 10,85,097 first dose vacines and 5,58,782 jabs.
Apart from government and private hospitals, vaccine was being administered in Primary Health Centres, anganwadi and noon meal centres, railway station, bus depots and in important places were people used to congregate in large
numbers.
Besides mobile camps were also organised to target the moving population.
Chief Minister M K Stalin, who inspected the vaccination camp at Dr MGR Central Railway Station and other places, has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide additional 50 lakh doses of Covid vaccines to the State every week to cover the eligible uncovered population by 31 October.
He cited the resounding success of the two mega vaccination camps organised by the government on 12 and 19 September and said the State was easily capable of utilising 50 lakh vaccine doses every week–five lakh doses/per day for six days and 20 lakh doses for a mega camp on the seventh day of the week.
Health Minister Ma Subramanian said while 56 per cent of the eligible population in the State had received the first dose of vaccine, 17 percent had received the second dose.
