Chennai: Tamilnadu government is working on a Transgender Policy, and suitable amendments would be brought in police conduct rules to punish police personnel who harass members of the LGBTQ+ community.

This was informed by the State government in the Madras High Court which was hearing a case relating to the alleged police harassment of a same-sex couple.

State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohammed Jinnah also stated that circulars were issued to all top police officers impressing upon the need to conduct sensitisation programmes for the police personnel. The programmes had already begun in some of the districts.

Justice Anand Venkatesh directed the Tamilnadu Judicial Academy to file a report on steps taken to conduct sensitization programs for judicial officers.

He mentioned that it would have a huge impact if a single person from the LGBTQIA+ community is elevated as a Judge of a High Court.
