New Delhi: A Rahul Gandhi-led Congress delegation today met President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan here over the Lakhimpur violence incident in Uttar Pradesh where farmers were mowed down, allegedly by a car driven by a Union Minister’s son.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Rahul said, ‘We told the President that the accused’s father who is MoS Home, should be removed from the post as a fair probe is not possible in his presence. Likewise, we also demanded inquiry be done by two sitting judges of Supreme Court.’
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who was part of the delegation, said, ‘President has given us the assurance that he will discuss the matter with the government today itself.’
The delegation submitted a memorandum to the President, in which he was urged to take appropriate action in the issue.
‘Farmers want justice. Before Lakhimpur Kheri incident, MoS Ajay Misra had threatened farmers. We have demanded that Ajay Misra be removed and enquiry be conducted by two sitting judges of the Supreme Court,’ Rahul said.
‘Hope for Justice should never stop. We have raised demands on behalf of the victims,’ said Priyanka Gandhi.
