Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin today carried out inspection at the desalination plants at Nemmeli on the outskirts of Chennai.
Stalin instructed the officials to ensure that the work for the third desalination plant with a capacity of 150 MLD is completed before April 2023 as scheduled.
Once the plant commences operation, the water supply to the city’s residents will increase from 830 MLD to 980 MLD.
A release said works are also being carried out to lay pipelines from the plant to Pallavaram. ‘Stalin also inspected the pipe laying works that are now being carried out at Muttukadu. The water that will be got through this scheme will be supplied to the areas in South Chennai including Ullagaram, Puzhuthivakkam, Velacheri, Madipakkam, Sholinganallur, Alandur, St Thomas Mount, Pallavaram and IT Express corridor. As many as nine lakh people will be benefitted by this scheme,’ the release added.
The statement also recollected that the first desalination with a capacity of 100MLD was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at Minjur in 2010.
‘The second desalination unit was inaugurated at Nemmeli at a cost of Rs 805.8 crore with a capacity of 100 MLD per day. The foundation stone for the plant was laid on 23 February 2010 by Stalin who was the Deputy Chief Minister at that time. The plant commenced operation from 2013,’ the statement added.
