Sri Lankan Navy arrests 22 fishermen from TN

Chennai: The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 22 fishermen from Tamilnadu and Karaikal on Thursday while they were fishing southeast of Kodiyakarai. Among the 22 fishermen, 12 are from Nagapattinam, five from Mayiladuthurai, and five from Karaikal.

According to a Fisheries Department official, ‘we have sent reports to the governments concerned (Tamilnadu and Puducherry), which would reach out to the Union government. We are advising the fishermen not to venture into waters near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).’

Meanwhile, Chief Minister M K Stalin has written a letter to External Affairs Minister, Jaishankar, requesting to take action over attacks on Taminadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy and fishermen.

Stalin mentioned that 29 fishermen had been arrested and 82 fishing trawlers were still under the custody of the Sri Lankan government.
