K’taka Assembly resolution condemns TN over Mekedatu

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Legislative Assembly has unanimously adopted a resolution countering Tamilnadu’s similar move regarding the Mekedatu project across the river Cauvery.

The resolution appealed to the Centre to not approve the Cauvery-Vaigai-Gundar river-linking project proposed by Tamilnadu without Karnataka’s consent.

Moving the resolution in the Assembly, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said Karnataka has taken note of ‘the unlawful and unparliamentary-worded resolution’ of Tamilnadu passed on 21 March which opposes the Mekedatu project.

The Karnataka Assembly also urged the Central Water Commission and Ministry of Environment and Forest to immediately give necessary clearance for the Mekedatu project.

Terming the Tamilnadu’s resolution as unwarranted, against federal system, and the language used in as impolite, Bommai, citing Supreme Court order regarding Cauvery river water dispute, said Karnataka is within its Constitutional rights to implement the Mekedatu project.
