Chennai: Chief Minister M K Stalin has dialled up External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and discussed the prevailing economic crisis in Sri Lanka, while urging him to help the Lankan Tamils hit by the crisis.
An official release here said the Chief Minister expressed deep concern over the Tamils living in Northern and Eastern Provinces and those in Colombo who were hit hard by the unprecedented economic crisis and said the Tamilnadu government was ready to help them by sending essential commodities like rice, dhal and life saving drugs through sea from Tuticorin Port.
He urged Dr Jaishankar to accord necessary permission and take steps to distribute these humanitarian assistance through the Indian Embassy to starving Tamils in Jaffna and Colombo.
Stalin also recalled the memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Narendra during his visit to Delhi on 31 March and urged him to take steps to fulfil those demands immediately, the release said.
He also expressed his deep concern to the External Affairs Minister on the continued attack and assault on Tamilnadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel and urged him to take urgent steps to secure their release from prison and also their boats impounded by the Lankan authorities.
Dr Jaishankar assured the Chief Minister that necessary action would be taken on the demands put forth by him, the release added.
