Chennai: Deenadayalan Vishwa, one of the top Tamilnadu table tennis players, passed away in a road accident, while travelling by road from Guwahati to Shillong for 83rd Senior National Table Tennis Championship.
Vishwa was part of the Tamilnadu Table Tennis Association, a State men’s team who were on their way to take part in the championships to be held in Shillong, Meghalaya.
A 12-wheel trailer, coming from the opposite direction, ploughed through the road divider and hit the taxi at Shangbangla, just after the Umliy check post, and plunged into the gorge. The taxi driver died on the spot, and Vishwa before reaching the Nongpoh Civil Hospital.
Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) said the three injured players are in a stable condition and out of danger. Vishwa’s parents and other family members were travelling to Shillong for the handover of his mortal remains.
