Chennai : The Indian Coast Guard, amid adverse weather conditions in view of Cyclone Asani, recovered a Tsunami Data Buoy of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT0 which was drifting from its moored position about 278 nautical miles east of Chennai.
A defence release said the Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (East), Chennai deployed on Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Shaunak’ to recover the Buoy.
The Tsunami Buoy was handed over to NIOT at Chennai harbour. These moored buoys are equipped with sensors, GPS, beacon light and satellite trans-receiver. They transmit oceanographic and meteorological data for providing critical information on Tsunami and Cyclone hazards.
