Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution seeking to change the official name of the state to Keralam. Keralam originally means ‘Land of coconuts’.
Presenting the resolution under section 118 in the Assembly, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan urged the Union Government to change the state’s name to ‘Keralam’ in all official documents and in the Constitution.
The UDF backed the resolution and did not suggest any amendments or modifications in it.
Following this, Speaker AN Shamseer declared that the resolution was unanimously passed in the Assembly.
The CM said that the need to form a united Kerala for the Malayalam speaking communities had emerged from the time of the freedom struggle. However, the name of the state was written as Kerala in the First Schedule of the Constitution, he said.
The request was made to change the name as per Article 3 of the Constitution.
