GCC cracks down on illegal debris dumping

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a weekly citywide cleaning drive to clear garbage and debris, particularly near water bodies, every Saturday. To curb illegal dumping, the GCC has designated specific areas for construction material waste disposal across all 15 zones. Violators who dump debris in public places will face penalties. The public must limit debris dumping in allocated areas. Those disposing of less than 1 tonne of construction waste will be fined Rs 2,000. Dumping over 1 tonne will result in a Rs 5,000 penalty. The fines align with the Solid Waste Management rules of 2016 and sub-rules of 2012.
