BJP, AIADMK find common ground amid differences


In a bid to bridge the gap and smooth over recent tensions, BJP state president K Annamalai extended an olive branch to the AIADMK on Thursday, affirming that there is “no problem” between the two parties. Annamalai also stated that he holds no grievances with any AIADMK leaders. While ideological differences have historically separated the two parties, he highlighted a “common thread” that binds like-minded political entities within the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) – none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. The key assertion made by Annamalai was the unifying force of Prime Minister Narendra Modi within the NDA coalition. He stated that anyone who endorses Modi’s candidacy for the post of Prime Minister in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections is a part of the NDA alliance. Addressing the controversy that had strained relations between the two parties, Annamalai reiterated that he had not spoken ill of Dravidian stalwart CN Annadurai and, therefore, saw no reason to issue an apology. He maintained that his statements were grounded in historical facts, emphasizing his need to respond when his “self-respect” was questioned. While acknowledging the ideological differences between the AIADMK and BJP, Annamalai downplayed their significance, suggesting that such disparities were not uncommon in the political landscape. He went on to stress that the BJP would assertively safeguard “Sanatana Dharma” (eternal righteousness), a stance that might not necessarily be mirrored by the AIADMK.
